Ms. Hayden began her clinical career as a certified alcohol counselor and went on to teach alcohol counseling on the college level. She has also taught "The Dynamics of Addiction" at the Advanced Institute of Psychoanalysis. After receiving her M.B.A. from Baruch College in New York and her M.S.W. from New York University, she took her psychoanalytic training at the Post Graduate Center for Mental Health. She studied "Treating the Sex Addict" with Patrick Carnes and is a member of the National Council on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity.

Ms. Hayden has been trained in treating transgender issues by The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. She is a member of the Society for Clinical Social Workers and is affiliated with the Association for Clinical Self-Psychology. She works with fetishes, transgendered, transexual, and people in the BDSM scene.

Ms. Hayden has been interviewed as a sex addiction expert on both Lifetime Live and The Jenny Jones Show. Ms. Hayden has appeared on "The Learning Channel" as an expert on the chemistry and psychology of erotic pain. She has also been interviewed on the video Out of the Shadows: A New Look at S&M. She writes an ongoing advice column called "The Black Leather Couch" for Prometheus magazine and her articles appear on the website www.sexuality.org. In addition, she is a contributing writer for the soon-to-be released "The Sex Book", published by Cassell & Co.

Ms. Hayden is a prominent lecturer on the psychology of male sexual masochism in both the therapeutic community and in the New York S&M community. She practices in New York City but does telephone therapy with people throughout the country. She can be reached at d2hayden@mindspring.com.
